Funding explained
How is the Active Citizens programme is run and funded?
Active Citizens is run and funded via a network of over 100 third-sector (community and non-profit) partner organisations situated within around 40 countries where the programme operates. The British Council is the largest single partner - it funds the development and coordination of the programme, as well as many of the international exchange elements. British Council funding comes from the core grant it receives from the UK Government.
How do Active Citizens fund their social action projects?
The Active Citizens programme provides participants with training and workshops that help them to accurately identify priorities and solutions for positive social action within their communities. It also enables them to fully understand important links between local issues, local and international networks, the national development agenda in their country, and global issues. Therefore they are well-equipped to identify ongoing social action initiatives that they can contribute to, as well as potential sources of funding for new action. Partner organisations involved in the programme may also provide funding for social action as part of their existing remit. The British Council does not normally fund social action projects, but may provide funding support for local activity that promotes intercultural and international dialogue.
Need advice on funding your project?
If you’re an Active Citizens programme participant, your first point of contact for advice will be the local partner organisation working to deliver the programme in your community. Participants can also make the most of the useful Contact Points section of the website - if you haven’t registered your profile already, make sure you do so today here.
